The noh costumes presented here are all the works of the Yamagutchi Noh Costume Research Center. This Yamagutchi Noh Costume Research Center has its aim to find out the differeces between costumes made during the Edo period and ones made after the Meiji restoratin(1868) and to reproduce as perfectly as possible the noh costumes of the Edo period.
ここに収録された能装束は、山口能装束研究所によって製作された名品群である。この山口能装束研究所とは、江戸時代と明治時代以降との相違を追求し、江戸時代の能装束の復元を企図した研究所なのである。

Karaori with design of alternating blocks and
pattern of irises with bridges(yatsuhasi)

The karaori here is constructed of three blocks dyed scarlet, grass green and dark brown. The flowing water woven into the ground pattern sets up an effective association with the image of bridges, irises and water plants.The irises and water plants are woven with soft weft floats while the bridges have been woven with constrasting tightness to produce a change in effect. The combination different styles of weave---one with long floats, the others with many warp "stitches" to hold down the floats---is a peculiarity of karaori and variation in texture to the overall color sheme.
The motif of bridges with irises calls to mind the "Azuma kudari" chapter of the Tales of Ise. In noh costumes such motifs with a literary reference are relatively few.
経糸を締切とした紅・萌葱・黒紅の段替りの構成、地文風に流水を織り出しているが、これは八つ橋に杜若・河骨（こうぼね）などと水に由縁の植物を配している。杜若・河骨は浮緯でゆったりと仕上げ八橋は反対に固く織り上げて変化をつけている。このように浮緯を綴じた部分の変化ある取り合わせは唐織の特色で、色彩に加えて材質感の変化を求める意識をうかがわせる。
なお．八橋と杜若は「伊勢物語」の東下りの段を想起させるが、能装束には、このような文芸意匠は比較的少ない。

Of primary note is the rarity of the combination of white and navy blue as ground colors. Somewhat softening the contrast set up by these colors, but by no means giving into it, are the design motifs of chrysanthemums and roses done in many colors. The inclusion of roses among the motifs is an additional novelty. The various flowers are clustered around pairs of wheels which, though this is not entirely certain, are suggestive of flower carts.
白と藍の段替りという、まことに珍しい配色に先ず注目されよう。この強さを少しでも柔らげるように段にとらわれることなく、菊・ばらなどの上文を多彩に配した調子の高い意匠である。白と藍の取り合わせもさることながら、文様にばらをとりあげているという点にも注目される。
なお、それぞれの花のまとまりに、双輪がそえてあるのは、それを明らかにしないが、花車をあらわそうとする気持ちがあるのであろう。
